Settling in, Fishing's Good

Shinnecock bay/Inlet/Ocean

The bluefish continue to dominate the report this week. Both the gators and the cocktails are in the inlet, around the bridge and outside the inlet too. Tins, bucktails and soft plastics are all doing the job. The fluke bite seems to be improving with the better weather and sun warming the waters. The western end of Shinnecock bay has been better but we did have some reports of fluke near the inlet. Try targeting the flats for that warmer water. Gulp, squid and spearing all working. The striped bass are still here but a bit more challenging to get due to the amount of bluefish. Live baits drifted in the inlet along with clams have accounted for a few fish.

Peconic bay

The porgies are the main course with a few weakfish, bluefish and striped bass in the mix. Those who have been targeting the porgies have also found some quality seabass, safely released of course. Jessups neck and Rogers rock are good places to start. The porgies have been taking clam and worms along with a few logs of clam chum. If your looking to target the weakfish a hi-lo rig tipped with strips of squid is best.Bluefish have been stealing baits for all other species on a regular basis.

Shorebound

The Shinnecock continues to please anglers looking to bend a rod with plenty of bluefish for everyone. Spoon, diamond jigs, bucktails and soft plastics all working well. If you are able to get a bucktail through the blues there are hungry striped bass below them. The ocean beaches have seen bluefish and some striped bass too. The Ponquogue bridge is holding the bluefish too. The striped bass have been biting on the night tides when the blues are less active. Bucktails and soft plastics have taken bass to 30". The Shinnecock canal has plenty of action with fluke, blowfish, porgies and bluefish. Best when the locks are closed for the bottom species and a slow moving current for the bass and blues. Most of the small inlets in the Peconics are producing porgies.
