The Action Continues, Now the Weather

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean

Shinnecock bay has both cocktail and gorilla size bluefish chasing bait. Guys have done best around the Ponquogue bridge and the Shinnecock inlet. Best lures have been spoons and bucktails. The fluke bite is still lagging in the bay due to the cooler water temps. Best bite has been in the western side of the bay on the outgoing tide due to the warmer water. The standard squid spearing combo as well as gulp baits are all working. Quogue canal is another good spring spot where fluke, weakfish, striped bass and bluefish can all be found. Striped bass are around the inlet and bridge areas too but you will need to get below the blues to target them.

Peconic Bay

The porgies continue to be the main targeted species in the areas around Jessups Neck and Robins island. Clam baits and chum will get them under the boat. The blues are lurking here too. Most are being caught as a by catch when targeting the porgies. The fluke reports from the areas around Shelter island have been scarce but put in a bit of time and I believe they can be found. The weakfish have moved into the deeper holes to avoid the bluefish and are also being caught as bycatch. Striped bass are around the small inlets and points and taking plugs in the dark.

Shorebound

The Shinnecock canal continues to please anglers with porgies, fluke, blowfish, cocktail bluefish, kingfish, striped bass and a few weakfish. Most are targeting the fluke and porgies with excellent results. The jetties of the Shinnecock inlet has seen mostly bluefish taking tins, spoons and bucktails. More of the same action with bluefish over at the Ponquogue bridge. Fluke bite still slow but should gain some speed this week with the sunshine warming the waters. Porgies are along most shore areas of the Peconics.
