Great Memorial Day Weekend Action!!
Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean
The Shinnecock bay has had a good amount of bluefish around the inlet and Ponquogue bridge areas. Most tins and spoons are working well along with most anything you care to throw at them. Tide hasn't mattered much just right time right place. Some striped bass are around these same areas but the blues are so aggressive the bass cant get to the baits. Some fluke are around as well but not taking the baits as they should be due to the lower water temps. Best action for fluke is shallower waters after a few days of sun. There have been a few reports of weakfish in the canals taking rubber baits.
Peconic
The porgy bite continues to dominate the action around Jessups neck and Robins island. No anchoring needed, just drop some chum, baits and start bailing. Hearing of fish to 18". Clam baits, clam chum and worms, when available, are your best baits. A good amount of striped bass are in the Peconics too. Lots of schoolies with a few really good fish, to 42lbs, have been taken. The better fish are in the dark. Some cocktail sized bluefish are chasing baits as well. Weakfish are lurking in the deeper holes hiding from the hungry bluefish. Fluke reports have been few and far between. Good size sea bass have also been in the mix with the porgies but all have been released. Seabass opens June 23rd.
Shorebound
The ocean beaches east and west of Shinnecock inlet have seen schoolie bass, bluefish and even a couple stray weakfish. No reports of fluke yet. Swimmers, bucktails and tins all in the mix. The Shinnecock inlet has had a good bluefish bite going on for about 5 -6 days now with fish to 35" not out of the norm. The same kind of bite has been going off at the Ponquogue bridge. Guys are using tins, spoons, bucktails and plugs. I guess you could say everything is working. A few striped bass have been taken from the jetties of the inlet but the blues have dominated. Fluking is still a bit slow due to the cooler water temps. The Shinnecock canal has been like what I would call an aquarium lately. Porgies, bluefish, striped bass, blowfish, kingfish, fluke, weakfish and searobins are all being caught. The blowfish are not small, they are nice size. This is not an exaggeration, get in tune with the lock schedule and get there just before they open.
