Shinnecock & Peconic Fishing Report
Shinnecock
The fluke bite improved with most taking a few keepers for the box. The turn of the tide, hi or low has been best. Most areas both west and east of the bridge are holding fish, just a matter of working the tide and wind direction. Squid, Spearing, Gulp and Strip baits all working. A few reports of some fluke both on the Shinnecock reef and to the west of it in 85 feet. Seabass are chomping baits out on the reef. The number of keepers continues to decline due to the amount of boats working it each day. If you're looking for keeper seabass I would advise you to try some of the deeper pieces. The action around the Ponquogue bridge is good for topwater lures cast to cocktail blues and schoolie bass at dawn or dusk. Lots of bait has moved into the bay along with some spanish mackerel hot on their tails. The few keeper striped bass around have been taken on drifted live baits. If its sharks you want you don't have to go far. Go out the inlet, find a school of bunker, snag, drop and wait. It will not take long to hook up. We are hearing of many different types in our waters.
Peconic
The porgies are still a good bet throughout the bay and taking clam and worm baits. The weakfish are in the deeper, cooler holes out near Jessups Neck and in Roses Grove. Cocktail blues are chasing bait around the small inlets.
Shorebound
The Shinnecock Canal is holding porgies, small seabass, and a few fluke. The jetties of the Shinnecock inlet have seen fluke, trigger fish, small seabass, bluefish, striped bass and some porgies out on the tips of the jetties. Over at the Ponquogue the schoolie striped bass are on the night tides and some fluke during the day. Our ocean beaches have seen a few schoolie bass and fluke.
Offshore
The tuna bite SE of Block Island continues to be good along with some wahoo in the mix. The Coimbra area has seen a few tuna as well to those who stick it out along with a few mahi on the floaters. If its sharks you're looking for there is no shortage, just look for some bunkers schools and you should have no problem.
